Bafana Bafana receive timely boost as Aubrey Modiba joins training

Good news in the Bafana Bafana camp ahead of their crunch 2026 FIFA World Cup opening game against Mexico on Thursday as head coach Hugo Broos hinted that defender Aubrey Modiba could be available for selection.

Modiba has been undergoing treatment for a hamstring injury since the end of the season and has not been training with the team, while sitting out of the last two matches against Nicaragua and Jamaica.

However, Broos has told SABC Sport that ‘The Postman’ will start training with the team today.

"No, I think things are going well with Aubrey and we'll give him special treatment, so I think from tomorrow he will train with the group," said Broos.

"And if nothing happens in the next days, Aubrey should be available for the game on Thursday."

Broos also expressed his happiness with the facilities and warmth of the people in Pachuca, their base camp for this World Cup, and says their success will be largely influenced by the reception they have found here.

"It's very important, once we knew the draw in December and we knew we had to play our first game, the opening game, against Mexico, immediately I knew we needed a place where we could prepare in relation to the high altitude," he added.

"So I visited Pachuca in the end of February and I was very happy with the accommodation, with the pitches and I was very happy with what we found there at the University of Football – you have everything you want and need to prepare.

"Also, the people are very helpful, we can't ask for anything because before we ask, it's already there, so again I'm very happy that we are here, and if we have good results in the World Cup, it's certainly because we have magnificent preparation here in Pachuca."
