Zwane pleased with Chiefs performance against Maritzburg

Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane's men came out on top with a battling victory in the Nedbank Cup against Maritzburg United on Friday.

Despite Maritzburg being down to ten men in the 38th minute after Travis Graham's second booking, Chiefs had to dig deep to secure their progression to the round of 16 in extra-time.

Christian Saile scored his first goal for the club in the second minute of extra-time before Ashley Du Preez doubled the score with seven minutes left on the clock.

"It's always difficult to play against a team with a red card. They form a block and wait for the right moment to attack. We warned the guys about Kwame Peprah, who is strong and good at holding the ball, but the young man – number 20 [Editor note: #20 Friday Samu did not play] still gave us problems."

Despite struggling to score in regulation time, the Amakhosi legend believes getting the first goal in extra-time opened the game up for them to kill it off.

"The game opened up when we got the first goal. We could have wrapped it up earlier but we need to work on our composure and wait for the right moment to give the right pass," he added.

"When we scored the second goal, we secured the victory before Maritzburg could equalize. They hit the upright, which could have changed the game if they had scored."

Despite not taking all their chances in the last 15 minutes, Zwane was pleased with the team's performance.

"What is good is that we managed to keep a clean sheet and scored two goals," he concluded.
