Arthur Melo reflects on Barcelona stint: Fond memories and desire for return

Former Barcelona midfielder Arthur Melo has opened up about his time at the club, expressing his gratitude for the wonderful moments he had.

In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, the 26-year-old shared his thoughts on living in Barcelona and playing for the prestigious club. Recalling his time in the city, he expressed his fondness, stating, "It was very nice. The city is incredible, and it is a club that I have very good memories of. I lived very happy moments, and the memories are all positive."

Arthur, who joined Barcelona from Brazilian side Gremio in 2018, reminisced on his journey. Despite signing a six-year contract, his tenure at the club was cut short after just two seasons when he was sold to Juventus in exchange for Miralem Pjanic. Reflecting on his departure, Arthur commented, "I left when I was about to enter my third season, and by then, I had gained more experience compared to when I arrived from Brazil. While the Brazilian league is important, it cannot be compared to the Spanish one. I believe that at that time, I was already fully adapted and had become a better player, more confident."

Maintaining contact with former teammates, Arthur mentioned his close relationship with Frenkie De Jong, as well as his ongoing conversations with Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. Although the latter two have recently left the club, Arthur emphasized their friendship and expressed his continued support by watching their matches, as he enjoys their style of play.

Unashamedly declaring himself a Barcelona fan, Arthur affirmed his affinity for the club, revealing that he would not hesitate to return if the opportunity arose. "Yes, of course [I am a Barcelona fan]. I don't have to hide it. I like how they play; I enjoy watching their matches, and I feel a great affection for Barça. In the world of football, anything can happen. I have experienced incredible moments here, and their style of play suits me," he asserted.

Reflecting on personal growth, Arthur acknowledged his development as a player since joining Barcelona. He explained, "When I arrived at Barça, I was quite young. Perhaps I hadn't matured enough to face certain challenges. Now, I am a much better player in every aspect”mentally, physically, and in my understanding of the game. Today, I feel that I have gained a wealth of experience that enriches my life. Overcoming difficult times has taught me valuable lessons."

Having played in both La Liga and Serie A, with a close glimpse of the Premier League during his loan spell at Liverpool, Arthur expressed his preference for La Liga, praising its emphasis on possession and technical football. However, he also acknowledged the valuable lessons he learned tactically in Italy and the incredible intensity of the English game.

In conclusion, Arthur had high praise for former Barcelona captain Lionel Messi, describing him as "out of this world" and possibly the best player in history, or at least one of the top three. Having shared special moments with Messi in the locker room, Arthur commended the Argentine's understanding of the game and his consistent high-level performance throughout the years.
