Abdeslam Ouaddou slams Orlando Pirates late match 'circus'

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou couldn’t hide his displeasure with what he described as a circus from some of his players in the last 15 minutes of their Carling Knockout quarterfinal win.

Pirates beat Magesi FC 2-1 at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday, thanks to goals from Tshepang Moremi and substitute Evidence Makgopa.

But the visitors pulled one back through Lehlogonolo Mokone late in the game, much to the frustration of Ouaddou.

"We managed to have a lot of chances, I think at half time we could have led with five goals, which is a positive point so I'd like to congratulate my boys for that," said Ouaddou.

"It was important to take this victory and go through to the next stage, but my big disappointment is the last 15 minutes, and it's the first time I will address this.

"If you want to be more ambitious and you want to go forward, we have to stop this nonsense of playing sterile possession, and to enjoy playing small passes.

"I think if we want to do this, we have to go to the circus. I'm not here to go to the circus or play circus, I'm here to improve my players, to go forward, and we have to stop this nonsense because at the end, we conceded a goal and the target was not to concede.

"So I think we have to improve on that if we want to be more ambitious."

Ouaddou’s criticism comes just a few days after mixed reactions to Kaizer Chiefs players’ showboating during their CAF Confederation Cup match at Dobsonville Stadium, where they too conceded late on to win 3-1 against DR Congo side AS Simba.

The former Morocco international captain says, while he is still embracing South African football, it must come with a professional element.

"I'm respecting a lot the culture and traditions and I'm coming into a fantastic country that loves football – South Africa is a land of football, but we have to find the right balance between [that and] doing our job and scoring goals," he added.

"It's okay because it's a cup game, but in the league, every goal is very important, especially at the end [of the season], so for me, as long as you make passes.

"You can make 20, 30 passes to make a show, I'm happy for that, I was a footballer as well and I like the show, but go forward and finish the action. If you stay in the same position and make 30 passes in five square metres, it's not interesting."
