Orlando Pirates roar back to beat La Cure Waves in CAF Champions League

The Buccaneers had been held to a frustrating 0-0 draw in the first leg in Mauritius, but they responded with three goals in a lively first half to take control of the tie.

La Cure Waves made the perfect start, taking the lead in the sixth minute through Ivan Ami after putting Pirates under early pressure. The visitors' advantage, however, lasted only two minutes before Orlando Pirates hit back to level the match when Kabelo Kgosietsile scored.

The hosts quickly gained momentum and Kamogelo Sebelebele completed the turnaround in the 25th minute, putting Pirates 2-1 ahead. Sebelebele remained one of the most dangerous players in attack and later went close to adding another when his effort was saved by La Cure goalkeeper Jean Ramdiane.

Yamela Mbuthuma then put Pirates firmly in command in the 37th minute, making it 3-1 before half-time. His goal capped an impressive attacking spell from the home side and gave the Buccaneers a two-goal cushion at the break.

Pirates continued to create chances after the restart. Oswin Appollis tested Ramdiane shortly after half-time, while Sebelebele forced another good save with a powerful volley. The visitors' goalkeeper was increasingly busy as Pirates looked for a fourth goal.

Appollis was also prominent throughout the attacking play, while Kabelo Kgositsile threatened from distance and had an effort parried by Ramdiane in the first half.

La Cure Waves never completely gave up, but Pirates controlled the second half well and closed down the spaces to prevent the Mauritian side from building sustained attacks. Neo Rapoo went close to adding another from a set-piece in the 69th minute, but Ramdiane produced another good save.

The 3-1 victory completed a 3-1 aggregate success for Pirates and ensured the Soweto club moved through to the next stage of the CAF Champions League qualifiers.
