Sundowns returned to winning ways at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday evening, with Siyanda Ndlovu’s 20th-minute strike securing their passage to the Carling Knockout quarterfinals.
The Portuguese tactician admits preparations were far from ideal following a difficult few days for the club, but was pleased with the determination his players displayed to overcome a stubborn Gallants side.
"A very tough match prepared under very difficult circumstances, played with a lot of emotional stress, but a very important victory, as you may imagine. In a competition where you have no other opportunities than the moment you play a game," Cardoso said.
"I think we started quite well, but we complicated our own lives. There are a lot of things that emerged from the match in terms of what we wanted as an answer. We, as coaches, knew very well the kind of emotional state the team had been in and how important it was not to suffer a goal."
Cardoso believes it was crucial for Sundowns to respond positively and demonstrate their commitment to supporters following their continental disappointment.
With the Brazilians now turning their attention to the challenges ahead, the 54-year-old says the immediate priority is to approach each fixture with renewed determination rather than dwell on recent setbacks.
Cardoso has also reflected on the difficult period Sundowns endured between Friday’s Champions League setback and their midweek cup encounter against Gallants.
The unexpected early elimination from a competition in which the Pretoria outfit have consistently challenged at the highest level left the squad with little time to process their disappointment.
The Sundowns mentor says addressing the players’ mindset became an important part of preparations, with the technical team working to restore confidence and ensure the group was mentally ready to compete again.
Meanwhile, Cardoso acknowledges that Sundowns are still navigating selection challenges, with influential players such as Teboho Mokoena and Khuliso Mudau remaining unavailable through injury. In addition, Keagan Johannes who was wearing a moon boot, after sustaining an injury in training.
The Portuguese coach says the technical team must continue adapting and finding solutions within the squad.
