Abdeslam Ouaddou demands higher standards despite convincing win

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou says the only real positive from their victory over Marumo Gallants was securing maximum points at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday night.

The 3-0 win has seen Pirates move six points clear at the top of the Betway Premiership standings, with 38 points from 16 matches, although second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns have a game in hand due to CAF inter-club commitments this weekend.

Ouaddou, however, expressed frustration over missed scoring opportunities, stressing that teams with ambitions of winning major honours must be more clinical in the final third.

"I've been saying that it's becoming a sickness, and if we want to be more ambitious, let's convert the chances and let's say we can go even further or deeper, but let's be more serious in the last third," said Ouaddou.

"And we are not here to play circus, we are here to compete – there is a lot of expectation from the club and the fans."

Since the start of the PSL era in 1996, the Buccaneers have won the league just four times, with their last triumph back in 2011/12, and Ouaddou says his players must recognise the responsibility of representing the club and rise to the challenge.

"It's a huge club in Africa, everybody's ambitious here and I am very ambitious, and I will not hide it – we work to win the title, we will not hide it," he added.

"And if some people don't want to win the title, I think they have to just put their hands up and say it because I don't want to lose time with people who want to jog on the pitch – I don't want to lose time, I'm not here for that."
