URC: Lions snap losing streak to beat Connacht and keep slim hopes alive

The Lions snapped a five-match winless streak after beating Connacht 26-7 in their United Rugby Championship clash at Ellis Park on Saturday.

Flyhalf Kade Wolhuter kicked 11 points to guide the Lions to a vital victory that keeps their slim hopes if reaching the URC playoffs alive.

The home team scored the first try of the game after 15 minutes when flank Renzo du Plessis powered over while Wolhuter added another two penalties to give the Lions a 11-0 halftime lead.

Wolhuter was on target again early after the interval to extend his team's lead but the hosts suffered a setback when Du Plessis was sent to the sin bin for cynical play.

The visitors though did not capitalise on their numerical advantage and instead it was the Lions who scored another try through JC Pretorius for a 19-0 lead.

Connacht grabbed a late consolation try through replacement prop Eoin de Buitlear but the home side sealed the contest when Edwill van der Merwe went over for a five-pointer.

The Lions next face Scarlets knowing only victory will keep their slim hopes in the tournament alive.
