URC: Lions record first win of the season after seeing off Scarlets at Ellis Park

The Lions recorded their first win of the United Rugby Championship campaign after a 29-18 triumph against Scarlets at Ellis Park on Saturday.

After three consecutive defeats on road, the Lions scored four tries to the Welsh outfit's two as they look to kick-start their season.

Both sides struggled in the first half with Sam Costelow landing a penalty for the visitors before Quan Horn darted over for the game's first try to the home team a slender 5-3 lead at the break.

The Lions upped the temp after the interval with flyhalf Chris Smith landing a penalty to extend the lead but Costelow replied to keep the Scarlets in touch.

The home side then went over for try from a maul with hooker Franco Marais crashing over the try line.

The Welsh reduced the deficit to to 16-13 after they were awarded a penalty after the referee adjudged the hosts of collapsing a maul.

The Lions though finished strong and replacement prop Morne Brandon going over two five-pointers to make sure his team took maximum points from the contest.

The Lions next host Ulster, while the Scarlets head to Kings Park to take on the Sharks.
