Sharks pickpocket Gianni Lombard from Lions

The Sharks confirmed they have recruited former Junior Springbok Gianni Lombard from the Lions this week.

The Durban franchise took to social media on Wednesday to confirm that Lombard has signed a three-year deal. It comes off the back of eight years with the Lions, which included a short spell on loan to Japan League One team NTT Red Hurricanes in 2022.

While predominantly used as a flyhalf, Lombard has run out at fullback due to his aerial skills and educated boot. He scored 145 points for the Lions.

Lombard cut his teeth at Paarl Boys High before joining the junior ranks of Boland, then Western Province. He played South African schools and for the Junior Boks from 2017-2018.

The 28-year-old follows a host of Lions players - namely Jordan Hendrikse, Edwill van der Merwe, Vincent and Emmanuel Tshituka -  who have join the Sharks in recent times.

The Sharks seem well-stocked at flyhalf, with Hendrikse, Siya Masuku and youngsters Jean Smith and Vusi Moyo. However, they are thin at fullback with just Springbok Aphelele Fassi and Hakeem Kunene on the books.
