The 19-year-old walked away with his second Player of the Match accolade of the season, underlining his growing influence in the Durban side. The victory also moved the Sharks into fourth place on the United Rugby Championship (URC) standings. Pietersen believes Siyaya has enormous potential but says the coaching staff must be careful not to put too much pressure on the youngster as he continues his development.
"Zekhethelo, obviously, it's his Player of the Match performance. It also comes down to the forward pack that gives him that platform to do his thing. He's a special kid, unbelievable talent. He's just 19, so he's learning as he's growing, and we, as coaches, know we have to be patient with him. Sometimes he will do some crazy things, which we like about him, and ja, just an unbelievable talent and a good and humble kid, and he's hungry to get better," said Pietersen.
The victory over Munster completed a perfect three-match European tour for the Sharks, who also secured wins against Lyon and Cardiff. It was a significant turnaround for the Durban outfit, who showed plenty of character to collect three victories away from home. Pietersen has praised the collective commitment within the squad, saying the determination to fight for one another has been particularly encouraging.
The Sharks endured a difficult European campaign last season, finishing without a single victory on the continent. However, their latest tour has painted a very different picture, with the team showing greater unity and resilience under Pietersen's guidance. The coach has credited the leadership group, including Nick Hatton, Emile van Heerden, Vincent Tshituka and Ethan Hooker.
With several key players now joining the Springboks for the November leg of the Nations Championship, Pietersen has wished his charges well as they prepare for international duty. Ethan Hooker, Ox Nché, Thomas du Toit, Emmanuel Tshituka and Edwill van der Merwe are among the Sharks players named in Rassie Erasmus' squad. The Durban coach says he has confidence in the players and believes they will make a valuable contribution to the national team's campaign.
