Ruan Nortje relishing every opportunity after memorable year with the Boks

Springbok lock Ruan Nortje is hoping to earn a place in the matchday squad for this weekend’s clash against Georgia at Mbombela Stadium - a venue he has very fond memories of.

Nortje featured there during last year's win over Argentina, and says the electric atmosphere inside the stadium left a lasting impression.

The 26-year-old enjoyed a dream season for the Boks last year, proving his worth in the green and gold after being called upon following injuries to Bok stalwarts Lood de Jager and Franco Mostert.

Nortje featured in victories over the Wallabies and All Blacks in 2024, but the clash against Argentina at the Mbombela Stadium is another cherished memory.

"The Mbombela Stadium is one of my favourite places to play," he told reporters on Monday.

"I was fortunate to face Argentina here last year, and I'll never forget the atmosphere and the support for the team. The people here really get behind the Boks, so I'll be very excited if I get an opportunity to play this weekend."

Opportunities in the second row are hard to come by with so many Bok greats in the mix, but Nortje is determined to grab every chance he gets.

"This is a fantastic environment to be part of, and every player is privileged to be here, so when you get the opportunity, you have to grab it with both hands."

As one of the younger locks in the Bok squad, Nortje says being able to learn from so many greats of the game is a blessing.

"I try to learn as much as I can whenever I'm in the team, especially if one looks at the locks we have, such as Eben (Etzebeth), RG (Snyman) and a couple of others, who are among the best in the world."

Meanwhile, Springbok assistant coach Deon Davids revealed that all the players in the squad received a clean bill of health and will be available for selection this week.

The coach also addressed the situation around Springbok No 8 Jasper Wiese, who is set to face a disciplinary hearing after receiving a red card in Gqeberha. Davids said the team trust the judicial process and are prepared to deal with any eventuality.

"World Rugby have a disciplinary process they follow, and we respect that," he said. "As a team, we will be there for Jasper regardless of what decision is made."

"We have versatile players in our squad, and players like Evan (Roos), Siya (Kolisi) and Marco (van Staden) can cover No 8, so we have a few players who can play there for us."
