Report: Manie Libbok signs long-term deal with Stormers

Springbok flyhalf Manie Libbok has reportedly put an end to speculation over his future by signing a contract extension with the Stormers keeping him in Cape Town until 2027.

That's according to the Rapport newspaper, which broke the news on Sunday.

Reports have long linked Libbok to French Top 14 side Racing 92 who have been desperately looking for a Finn Russell replacement, but it looks like he has chosen to stay in Cape Town for the forseeable future.

Libbok's career has dramatically transformed since joining the Stormers in 2021 after misfiring stints with the Bulls and the Sharks. The 26-year-old has gone from a recycled franchise player to a Springbok in two seasons.

The superstar has been one of the key elements to the Stormers' first major title in 2022 as they won the United Rugby Championship. He played a key role again this season as his exploits powered the side to back-to-back finals.

Even though his style is far more attacking than the Springboks have preferred from their fly-halves, his form could not be ignored and he debuted for South Africa against France late last year.

With Handre Pollard injured, Libbok's importance has grown and he showed his worth with a solid display in his first Test start against Australia in the the Boks' Rugby Championship opener.

Libbok says he is beginning to feel more settled in the Bok setup and is doing his best to learn from those around him.

"My first time coming into the camp, I was very nervous and didn't know what to expect. But coming in this time round, obviously I know the environment now, I know the coaches and they know me," he said.

"I get to work with world class coaches and I have improved and I have acquired skills that I can take back to the Stormers.

"Me and Damian play together at the Stormers and have played together since juniors, so we know each other quite well.

"Obviously Handre as well. He was at the Bulls at the time I was there and I played under Handre then. So we got to know each other very well. Since the Bulls days, I have learnt a lot from Handre.

"Willie also helps me a lot in the Bok set-up with the game. He helps with my decision making and to stay calm. I learn a lot from them as well as from coach [Mzwandile] Stick.

"Guys like Handre and Elton have vast experience, and my focus is to learn as much as I can from them."
