Lions loose forward Ruhan Straeuli forced to hang up boots at 26 after neck injury

Straeuli, the son of former Springbok and 1995 Rugby World Cup winner Rudolf Straeuli - currently CEO of the Lions -” confirmed his decision in a statement released by the franchise on Monday. The injury, sustained earlier this year, proved severe enough to bring a premature end to a career that had steadily gained momentum since his debut in 2020.

"Unfortunately, the playing chapter of my rugby career has ended sooner than expected," Straeuli said. "I would like to thank everyone who has supported me in my career. It has been an absolute privilege to be able to give my all for the city of Joburg."

Straeuli joined the Lions on trial in September 2020 and quickly established himself within the squad. He made 47 appearances across four competitions; 23 in the Currie Cup, 15 in the United Rugby Championship, six in the EPCR Challenge Cup, and three in friendly matches. He scored eight tries during his time with the team, earning a reputation as a reliable and hardworking loose forward.

Before turning professional, Straeuli represented Stellenbosch University in the Varsity Cup and came through the junior ranks of the Blue Bulls after attending Glenwood High and Menlopark. His grounding in competitive rugby was further shaped by his selection for the Bulls' Under-18 Academy team.

Though his professional playing career has come to an unexpected end, Straeuli's impact at the Lions and his dedication to the game leave a lasting impression. The rugby community will now watch with interest as he navigates the next phase of his involvement in the sport, potentially following in his father's footsteps in a leadership or administrative capacity.
