Homecoming: Double World Cup winner Faf de Klerk signs Cheetahs deal

Springbok livewire Faf de Klerk is returning to South Africa after signing a two-year deal with the Cheetahs.

The Bloemfontein franchise confirmed the signing of the 60-cap Bok veteran in a statement on Sunday.

"We're absolutely thrilled to welcome Faf to the Cheetahs family," it read.

"He brings incredible energy, experience and leadership - exactly what we need as we push to compete at the highest level. He's the kind of player who can shift the momentum of a match, and we know our supporters can't wait to see him in orange."

It is understood that de Klerk - who has spent the past four seasons in Japan - has made the move to be closer to his family.

"I'm so excited to announce that I'm joining the Cheetahs family, the team with the best supporters in South Africa," he said in a video released on the Cheetahs' social media.

"I can't wait to play with you!"

Despite not being part of the Springbok squad, coach Rassie Erasmus has indicated that the 34-year-old has been kept in the loop by attending virtual meetings.

De Klerk has been back to his opportunistic best with the Canon Eagles in the Jappen League One this season, scoring five tries in five matches.

In a statement confirming his departure from the Eagles, De Klerk issued heartfelt words,

"It's with a full heart that I look back on my time with the Yokohama Canon Eagles," he said.

"From the moment I arrived in Japan, I was welcomed into something truly special. This club is more than just a team - it's a family. The culture, the professionalism, and the pride everyone takes in representing the jersey made every day an incredible experience.

"To the supporters - thank you. Your passion and support never went unnoticed. Whether at a host game or a visitor game, you created an atmosphere that lifted us and made playing for this club something I will always cherish.

"To my teammates and staff, I'm grateful for the friendships and memories we've built together. It's a special group of people, and I've learned so much from being part of it.

"Japan has become a place very close to my heart. I leave with nothing but respect and appreciation for everyone involved with the Yokohama Canon Eagles. Thank you for everything, it's been an honour."

De Klerk played every minute bar four of the last two Rugby World Cup finals in Tokyo and Paris. More recently, the Mbombela native featured just twice for the Boks last season, coming off the bench against Italy and Georgia.
