Bulls mourn passing of former Springbok Cornal Hendricks

The Vodacom Bulls have paid tribute to former Springbok winger Cornal Hendricks, who died on Wednesday night at the age of 37.

Hendricks, born in Paarl, carved out an impressive professional career that saw him earn 12 Test caps for the Springboks and feature in 73 matches for the Bulls between 2018 and 2024, when he then returned home to Boland for the final chapter of his career.

Vodacom Bulls Chief Executive Edgar Rathbone paid tribute to the much-loved player, describing Hendricks as more than just a talented athlete.

“Cornal was a special soul who brought energy, laughter and heart wherever he went. He was the kind of person who could light up a room, a dependable teammate and an inspiring figure in our change room,” said Rathbone.

“Beyond rugby, he was a proud father, a cherished friend, and someone who reminded us of the joy in the game. Our deepest condolences go out to his wife, children, and everyone touched by his presence.”

Hendricks was equally known for his signature dance moves and infectious laughter, with his resilience shown after a heart condition brought his career to a sudden halt in 2015. However, he made a remarkable return to professional rugby, defying all odds and once again becoming a standout performer on the field, and Bulls director of rugby Jake White expressed sorrow and respect for the player and person.

“When we brought Cornal back to the game, he embraced the opportunity and inspired everyone around him. He was a warrior on the field and a role model off it," White added.

"His journey of overcoming adversity is one that uplifted so many in the rugby world. It was a privilege to coach him. He had an appetite for life that was truly infectious. Rugby has lost a remarkable man.”
