Ackermann praises Bulls character in dominant Lions victory

Bulls head coach Johan Ackermann believes his side delivered the level of performance required to overcome a competitive Lions outfit in their United Rugby Championship encounter.

The Pretoria-based side claimed an emphatic 57-15 victory in Saturday’s Jukskei derby at Loftus Versfeld.

Ackermann was particularly pleased with the maturity and resilience his players displayed, highlighting their ability to remain composed and stick to their game plan when proceedings became challenging.

"I'm just proud of the guys because we knew we had to be at our best to beat this in form Lions side, and all credit must go to the players for sorting out the set piece and for staying in the fight and sticking to the task."

The comprehensive victory marked an encouraging response from the Bulls following their defeat to Munster in the previous round of the United Rugby Championship. Ackermann also welcomed the return of 10 Springbok internationals, whose experience and quality provided a significant boost against the Lions.

Springbok loose forward Cameron Hanekom was among the standout performers in the Bulls’ commanding victory, producing several influential moments from the back of the scrum. The powerful number eight made his presence felt through his physicality, ball-carrying ability and effectiveness in contact, earning the Man of the Match accolade.

"Every player has certain strengths, and Cameron has shown his and that stood out in some of the phases today. He hasn't played with us for a long time, and he just came in and slotted in very easily. I'm happy with everyone's effort."

Ackermann says establishing dominance in the set pieces was among the Bulls’ key priorities heading into the derby against their Gauteng neighbours. However, the intense Pretoria heat presented an additional challenge, with players requiring a water break and an extended 20-minute half-time interval to recover.

The conditions also placed greater demands on the medical and support staff, who worked to keep the squad cool and hydrated. Ackermann acknowledged the contribution of everyone involved, including players outside the matchday squad, insisting the convincing result reflected a collective effort.
