Zulu claimed his first international title as World Male Strikers beat London Giants 54-42 at the Sir David Wallace Sports Hall on Sunday.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Zulu says team unity on and off the court was key to their success.

“Winning my first-ever international trophy is honestly an unbelievable feeling. I don’t know how to put it into words. It’s something I’ve always wanted since I started playing netball, so to finally experience it with World Male Strikers is a dream come true.

“What made this team so special was our unity on court and off court. We believed in each other, and everyone knew that when we were on court, we had to put the team first. We fought for each other from the first whistle of the tournament until the final match,” said Zulu.

World Male Strikers is an international side made up of players from different countries, with most of the squad coming from the USA and Jamaica. Zulu earned his opportunity to join the team following an impressive showing in Jamaica’s domestic league last year.

“Last year, I was invited to play in a league in Jamaica, where my team finished on the podium and I received an accolade. I think that opened the door for me to be invited to the World Male Strikers team.

“To be honest, I was over the moon when I saw the email from them. At first, I didn’t believe it until I received a follow-up message on Instagram,” added Zulu.

The defender says he is grateful for the opportunity to play abroad and believes the experience will help him continue to grow as a player.

“Firstly, I just want to mention that I’m really grateful for the opportunity to be part of World Male Strikers and the tournament. Personally, I’m proud of my performance. I gave my best, stayed committed and contributed whenever the team needed me.

“As a team, we outdid ourselves. I’m proud of the effort everyone put in. We gave our best throughout the tournament, and I believe there’s definitely room for improvement. For now, we can learn from this experience, keep working hard and come back better and stronger as a team,” he expressed.
