Prudence Sekgodiso clocks PB to win inaugural Simbine Classic

Multiple South African middle-distance champion Prudence Sekgodiso delivered a strong performance to win gold at the inaugural Akani Simbine Classic held at Pilditch Stadium on Tuesday.

Sekgodiso clocked a personal best of 4:08.93 to win the women’s 1500m and walked away with the R50 000 prize.

She finished ahead of fellow South Africans Karabo More (4:11.90) and Carina Viljoen (4:17.02) in front of a packed crowd.

Sekgodiso told SABC Sport she had doubts before the race but was happy to perform when it mattered.

"After the Nationals I doubted myself, but I went back to the drawing board and we did some touch-ups here and there, and I came here just to test where my training was at, and I'm very happy about the win and the PB. It shows we are on the right track."

The Olympic 800m finalist said More pushed her all the way, helping her produce a winning run. More is coached by multiple Olympic champion Caster Semenya.

The 24-year-old from Limpopo is currently balancing both the 800m and 1500m and says she is enjoying experimenting this season, with no major global championships on the calendar.

"Well this year we just want to play around with the different events and race as much as we can. We are going to race both the 800m and 1500m this year. We'll see where it goes from here."

Sekgodiso, coached by Samuel Sepeng, said this race is part of her training plan. She added that she would have liked to try the 400m but feels she lacks the speed for it.
