Weightlifting athlete and coach Daniel Katzav says he is switching focus to local competitions, having missed out on qualification for the Commonwealth Championship in India next month.
The 32-year-old was back on the platform with the hope that he’d reignite his dream of representing South Africa again.
Katzav is a former Gauteng weightlifting title holder who is now a personal trainer in Johannesburg, and he is also part of the provincial development committee.
Speaking to SABC Sport, he explains why his Commonwealth journey ended.
"I was angling for qualification, but I had to step back due to personal reasons. I will be putting in a lot more effort into Nationals, seeing that I missed out on qualification," said Katzav.
Katzav, however, says he is open to availing himself as a coach for the team that is heading to India or any other competition this year.
"I might be heading to Ghana as a coach to assist the athletes participating in the Junior African Championships, but it depends on the weightlifting Federation of South Africa," explained Katzav.
Katzav also speaks about his passion for finding emerging talent within the weightlifting community.
"They recently had their Junior SA Champs, so everybody under the age of 20 years old were competing.
"I think the youngsters did exceptionally well, and some of them put up some fantastic numbers. There was also great competition between Gauteng and Western Province."
