SA athletes ready to shine at Kip Keino Classic in Kenya

Fresh from an action-packed national championship, South Africa’s top sprinters are heading to Kenya with confidence and momentum as they prepare for the Kip Keino Classic on Saturday.

All eyes will be on Gift Leotlela, who arrives at the iconic Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi in top form after defending his 100m national title in Stellenbosch last weekend.

The talented sprinter will be up against a world-class field in the East African country, including local hero Ferdinand Omanyala and Mark Otieno, countryman Rivaldo Roberts, Canada’s Aaron Brown, as well as American Brandon Hicklin.

Under the guidance of coach Thabo Matebedi, Leotlela believes this race will be the perfect test ahead of the upcoming Diamond League events Shanghai and Xiamen, China next month.

“It’s going to be explosive. I just want to run a fast time. The competition is strong, and I’m excited to see how fast I can go before China,” said Leotlela.

In the 200m, South Africa will be represented by the in-form Sinesipho Dambile, who also claimed gold at the national championships.

The 24-year-old has been building consistency and confidence, and this race presents another big opportunity to measure himself against top international athletes.

“I’m in great shape and looking forward to testing myself again. It’s a big opportunity, and I hope it sets the tone for my season.”

Meanwhile, Zakithi Nene returns to defend his 400m title after skipping the national championships, and will be eager to prove he is still the man to beat in Nairobi.

The Kip Keino Classic is more than just another race for the local athletes as it serves as a preparation for the upcoming World Relay Championships set to take place in Botswana from 2-3 May.
