23rd April 2025
Netball SA executives, led by acting President Mami Diale and the 2023 Netball World Cup board, led by Chairperson Patience Shikwambana, were summoned in parliament on Tuesday, to publicly shed light on the federation’s state of affairs.
Scrutinised by parliament MPs, looking into the 2023/2024 financial statements, NSA and the 2023 NWC board were unable to present a detailed report in response to questions based on financial management and the backing behind every transaction towards the World Cup.
The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee, Mr Joseph Job McGluwa stated that he will forward a wishlist that specifies all information required from NSA, and expects a detailed report in response, within a period of 14 days, which started the day after the announcement of NSA President Cecilia Molokwane’s suspension last Thursday.
“You (NSA) will receive a wish list from us, containing all the information we want. Listen carefully because in front of you sits a politician - your time for submitting the information is 14 days.
“The 14 days started from the 17th of April. You have no reason to hide anything, note that your 14 days started after the big announcement last week Thursday. You will receive a formal letter as well. Thank you for coming, I can only wish you well. Know that this is parliament and this is how we interrogate and deal with people who don’t respect the public purse,’’ said McGluwa.
Furthermore, the Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Peace Mabe, added to request the protection of whistleblowers and asked that all whistleblowers share reports based on facts, not just with the aim of assassinating characters.
“We all agree that we depend on parliament to see if we are on the right track or not. I want to touch a bit on whistleblowers because they are a very important part of good governance, and they need to be protected, faceless or not.
“If you are a whistleblower, please report on something that you are really sure of, because this exercise alone, we might wake up tomorrow, and all the sponsors can just withdraw from netball, it is not good for NSA. But if there are allegations, they should be brought forward and of course those who are guilty must have respect for the country and for the sport and step aside while they are being investigated,’’ expressed Mabe.
