Long-distance runner Kesa Molotsane shifts her focus to world champs

Long-distance runner Kesa Molotsane won’t be able participating in the Spar Ladies 10km Jozi leg on 1 October due to her commitment to represent South Africa at the world championships in Riga, Latvia on the same date.

Molotsane is the ambassador for the Jozi race and her achievements, such as winning the women’s 10km Grand Prix Series in 2017 and her recent participation in the Team SA University Games in China as a part of the management and support staff, highlight her talent and commitment to the sport.

She will compete in the upcoming half-marathon from 29 September and 1 October alongside Glenrose Xaba, and Cian Oldknow. Her presence in such events continues to inspire and motivate other athletes in South Africa and beyond.

Molotsane’s optimism about Team SA’s chances at the world championships in Riga is encouraging, and she is fully committed to delivering a solid performance alongside her teammates.

“South African female athletes are making significant strides in their performance, owing much of their progress to the fierce competition posed by international runners.

This heightened rivalry allows us to excel in championship events and bolsters our improvement in domestic races. I’m thrilled to have the privilege of representing my country, it presents yet another opportunity for personal growth and development.

In the world of running, it’s a perpetual journey of learning and evolving within the sport. While a part of me yearned to participate in the local 10km race, my commitment to national responsibility takes precedence,” shared Molotsane in an interview with SABC Sport.

Molotsane is actively seeking a fresh running team for next season, as her former long-term running club, Murray and Roberts, regrettably had to disband due to financial challenges in June.

There wasn’t a significant expectation for her to compete in the Tshwane 10km, given that she was already fulfilling national duties while participating in the World Student University Games in China at that time.

“For now, the focus is on representing the country and the rest will follow next season,” added Molotsane.
