Mabilo secured a decisive victory at the CGA elections held at Germiston Stadium over the weekend, polling 91 votes to Thokozani Mazibuko’s 75.
Having already served as acting president for 18 months, Mabilo now takes over the role on a permanent basis.
She will formally assume control of one of the country’s most influential athletics provinces once Fredericks, who was appointed by Athletics South Africa following the dissolution of the CGA board in October, completes the handover next month.
Speaking to the national broadcaster, Mabilo clarified that Fredericks’ role was purely administrative and that the newly elected board has not yet convened its first annual general meeting.
She stressed that the weekend’s focus was on restoring leadership through elections, with operational matters to be addressed in due course.
"Obviously, the first thing we would need to do is to have a meeting with the general manager [Mandla Radebe], then meet with Trevor [Fredericks], and thereafter formalise a meeting with the board so that we can conduct a formal handover with Trevor."
Now officially elected, Mabilo says one of her immediate goals is to change the perception that Central Gauteng Athletics is in disarray. She is determined to restore confidence and credibility within the province.
A taxation lawyer by profession, Mabilo says amending the CGA constitution is among her top priorities.
She believes the current constitution no longer serves the province effectively and requires urgent revision.
"In terms of the constitution, it is extremely imperative that one of the first things this board does is establish a constitutional committee and hit the ground running.
"That constitutional committee will obviously pick up from where the previous board left off and will not wait any longer, because the very constitution itself almost limited us, even in the election."
