Kamogelo Maseko: Team must stay competitive to defend Africa Cup

Spar Proteas goal attack Kamogelo Maseko says the team’s goal is to remain competitive as they look to defend their Africa Netball Cup title in Malawi.

The continental showpiece will take place from 8 - 14 December, with the South African national team looking to capture their fifth title since competing in this championship in 2010.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Maseko says she can’t wait to experience continental netball again.

“It is such an honour and a privilege to represent our country. As a team we will need to go out there and compete if we want to defend this championship. We really need to remain competitive in all aspects, but more than anything, I look forward to returning to continental netball,” said Maseko.

The Proteas are coming straight from an international tour, competing against world number one and two - Australia and New Zealand. Maseko says the experience from this series will come in handy as they prepare for the continental cup in Malawi.

“Yes it does give us a bit of an advantage going to the Africa Cup. I mean we played against number one and two in the world, that comes with a different kind of intensity - because we were challenged as a team and were pushed outside of our comfort zone. We look to use that experience as we go and compete in Lilongwe,” added Maseko.

Despite facing an injury setback Maseko enjoyed a decent domestic season with the Gauteng Jaguars, helping the team to secure a bronze medal at the 2025 Telkom Netball League - and this is what she had to say to sum up this year’s domestic season.

“I think I had a rocky start to this year’s TNL because of surgery, but I managed to kick up in international competitions with the national team. "
