Desiree Ellis looks to gauge individual performances in Morocco friendly

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis says she will use the upcoming international friendly match against Morocco to assess individual performances - building up to the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Ellis announced her 26-player squad including three reserves, expected to assemble for camp on Monday to prepare for their clash against the Atlas Lionesses taking place on 2 December.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Ellis says that it is not only about the scoreline as she also expects a good performance from the team.

"We do have a little more time to prepare for this friendly, because in the past couple of matches, you come to camp and you leave only two days later to play a match, so there isn't much you can do.

"Being at home gives us an opportunity to work on certain things, and it might not come right in the game because it's not about getting it right now, it's all about being ready for WAFCON."

Ellis adds that this upcoming clash will be a platform for some youngsters to raise their hands ahead of next year’s WAFCON.

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies striker Nthabiseng Majiya also earned a call up after displaying good form at club level.

Ellis says she credits coach Godfrey Sapula for instilling confidence in the young striker.

With AS FAR of Morocco winning the Champions League, Ellis believes it’s the perfect time to be testing themselves against Moroccan players.

"When you look at the overall Champions League, everybody is stepping up. Look at a team like Mimosa, they were debutants and I thought they were maybe unlucky not to win the title. Look at some of the WAFCON participants like Kenya and Cape Verde who have just come out of the blue, so if you think you just need to be there and that will be enough, its just not going to happen."
