Joe Morris wishes for the 2026 athletics calendar

Celebrated South African athletics administrator Joe Morris says his biggest wish for the 2026 season is to see the iconic Soweto Marathon staged without controversy.

Morris, who boasts more than 50 years’ experience in athletics administration, previously served on the Soweto Marathon Trust board and has a deep affection for the People’s Race.

According to the Athletics South Africa (ASA) calendar, the marathon is scheduled for 1 November at Nasrec, returning to its traditional slot on the first Sunday of November after being moved last year to accommodate a World Summit at the same venue.

However, ongoing disputes between the Non-Profit Company and the Soweto Marathon Trust have threatened the stability of the race and had a serious impact on entries.

Morris believes the infighting must come to an end for the good of the event.

“My biggest wish is that the infighting, rivalry and conniving between the two warring factions of the Soweto Marathon come to an end,” said Morris. “They must find common ground and resolve this madness because the event is bigger than all of them. We need to continue delivering a beautiful race for the people of Soweto and all South Africans, without turning it into a circus.”

Morris, who hinted that he may soon retire from athletics administration after more than five decades of service, also shared advice for ASA ahead of what is expected to be a demanding year both locally and internationally.

“My second wish is for Athletics South Africa to ensure that more events are televised on the national broadcaster and to restore the prestige of the sport,” he added.

“ASA must bid for top competitions. We have a competitive board, but provinces must work together with the support of ASA to ensure they function properly and do not punish the sport. My advice to ASA is simple: work together and don’t focus on politics."
