Irvette Van Zyl aims to disrupt Ethiopian dominance in Cape Town 10km race

All eyes are on South Africa’s road running sensation Irvette Van Zyl as she gears up for the first leg of the Spar Women’s Grand Prix, set to take place tomorrow at the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town.

The starter’s pistol will echo through the air at 7 am, marking the commencement of the first of the six riveting races.

Among the contenders, Ethiopian duo Tadu Nare and Salem Gebre emerge as the frontrunners to clinch victory.

Nare boasts an impressive track record, having secured the series for three consecutive years, and now aims to etch her name as the competition’s most decorated champion by seizing her fourth title.

Yet, Van Zyl, who commenced the year triumphantly with wins at the Dischem Half-Marathon and Pirates Half-Marathon, stands resolute in her quest to disrupt Ethiopian dominance.

Regrettably, Glenrose Xaba and Cacisile Sosibo will be absent from the starting line-up due to their commitment at the World Cross Country Championships in Serbia next week, as stipulated by Athletics South Africa (ASA) to ensure their optimal preparation for the event.

This leaves, Van Zyl as the standout South African contender, poised to challenge the formidable presence of East African athletes and potentially claim victory in the race.

“I’m pleased to announce that I’ll be in Cape Town tomorrow, after regrettably missing last year’s first race due to an ankle injury. This year, I’m off to a fantastic start.  I’m fit, healthy, and primed to clock a speedy time. With my Olympic qualification secured this race serves as a crucial component of my training regimen for the upcoming Paris Marathon. Rest assured. I’m in peak condition and free from any injuries,” said Van Zyl, a proud member of the Hollywood Athletics Club, in her interview with SABC Sport.

“It won’t be a simple task to halt the Ethiopians, but with a new year comes another chance to challenge them. I’m eager to compete, give it my all, and run my race to the best of my ability. Huger for victory is strong; let’s see what we can accomplish in the upcoming race,” added Van Zyl.
