Cindy Nkomo launches CGA election manifesto

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Road Running Commission chairperson hopeful Cindy Nkomo has officially launched her election manifesto, outlining her vision to revitalise road running in the province should she be elected.

The much-anticipated CGA elections will take place at Germiston Stadium on 24 January, following the dissolution of the federation by Athletics South Africa (ASA), which saw Trevor Fredericks appointed as administrator.

Nkomo believes she has the experience and leadership required to give road running in Central Gauteng a fresh start.

A current member of the CGA Road Running Commission and former race director of the Fat Cat 10km events in 2023 and 2024, Nkomo presented four strategic pillars that underpin her campaign in one of South Africa’s most influential athletics regions.

Her key objectives include positioning the Road Running Commission as the most professionally administered commission in Athletics South Africa, while ensuring consistent enforcement of rules across all stakeholders to promote fairness and transparency.

She also aims to create a road running environment that is attractive to sponsors and conducive to long-term partnerships with both the private and public sectors.

Another cornerstone of her manifesto is improving operational efficiency by encouraging innovation, creative thinking and continuous improvement. This includes the introduction of a reliable race fixtures calendar, increased digitalisation and automation, as well as a rules- and regulations-driven approach to governance.

“We want to communicate results effectively and place emphasis on key performances and development,” said Nkomo. “I am appealing to clubs to vote for me if they want to see real change. Road running is not only important in the province but across the country. We already have about 56 races on the 2026 calendar, and the challenge is how we profile and promote all these events, which is our responsibility as a commission.”

Nkomo also highlighted the need for inclusivity, transparency and better communication within CGA.

“We need to promote diversity and change some of the existing narratives at CGA. Our structures must be attractive to sponsors and partners and address the challenges we face. We need a holistic review of the Road Running Commission and must digitalise our communication. Whether you are 15 or 30 years old, you should be able to access information easily online.

“We must properly prepare and condition our athletes, and I believe I am the right person to lead this process. My focus is to ensure transparency and to run the Road Running Commission in a professional manner. CGA must reflect the demographics of both Central Gauteng and the country as a whole,” she added, as she leaves her fate in the hands of the voters.
