Australian Open QFs: Sabalenka powers past Jovic, Zverev fends off Tien challenge

Aryna Sabalenka shot into the Australian Open semi-finals with a dominant quarter-final victory, underlining her status as the world number one despite extreme playing conditions in Melbourne.

Sabalenka dispatched 18-year-old American Iva Jovic 6-3, 6-0, dropping just three games as the Australian Open's temperatures soared above 40 degrees.

While the scoreline suggested a mismatch, Jovic remained competitive in rallies but was unable to convert key moments, particularly on serve.

The match nonetheless represented a breakthrough tournament for Jovic, who turned 18 last month and is expected to break into the world's top 20 for the first time next month.

"These teenagers are testing me in the last couple of rounds," said Sabalenka.

"She's an incredible player, it was a tough match - don't look at the score, it wasn't easy at all. I'm super happy with the win, it was a tough battle."

Sabalenka had earlier eliminated another teenage prospect, 19-year-old Victoria Mboko, in the fourth round.

In the men's draw, Alexander Zverev also booked his place in the semi-finals after a hard-fought win over American Learner Tien.

The world number three prevailed 6-3, 6-7 (5/7), 6-1, 7-6 (7/3), leaning heavily on his serve and firing down a stream of aces.

"Without my aces I probably would not have won today," said Zverev.

"Obviously very happy with my serve.

"Learner off the baseline was playing unbelievable. The way he is playing is incredible."

Zverev, last year's runner-up after a heavy final defeat to Jannik Sinner, remains in pursuit of his first Grand Slam title at the age of 28.

Zverev will next face either world number one Carlos Alcaraz or home favourite Alex de Minaur for a place in the final.

For Tien, ranked 29th and the youngest player left in the men's draw at 20, the defeat marked the end of a memorable run at his first Grand Slam quarter-final.
