Australian Open: Alexander Zverev through while Daniil Medvedev slips to straight set deafeat

Alexander Zverev booked his place in the Australian Open quarterfinals while Daniil Medvedev crashed out in Melbourne on Sunday.

The third seed was in superlative form against Francisco Cerundolo, crushing 35 winners in his comfortable 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 victory on the John Caine Arena.

There were some struggle sin the hour-long second set, where Cerundolo broke Zverev and then had a marathon 13-point ninth game, but ultimately Zverev reigned supreme.

The win set up a last eight clash against Learner Tien, who upset 11th seed Medvedev in straight sets 6-4, 6-0, 6-3 to reach first major tour-level quarterfinal.

After winning a competitive opening set, the 20-year-old sensation reeled off 12 of the next 15 games of the match, closing out victory in just one hour and 39 minutes with a stunning backhand pass.

"It feels amazing, it is so special to do it here," said Tien on court afterwards.

"It is so special to come back here and play every year and it was a big goal of mine [to play well here] and I am super happy.

"Every year since I have come here the crowd support has been amazing. I don't know why, but every year it has been so special to come back and have a crowd like this, with so much energy. It means the world to me."

Elsewhere, local hopeful Alex de Minaur defeated Alexander Bublik 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 to book himself a quarterfinal against the red-hot Carlos Alcaraz.
