South Africa claimed their first win of the global showpiece with a 65-run victory over the Black Ferns at a buzzing Boland Park on Monday.

Proteas captain Sune Luus won the toss and elected to bat with Tryon ending up as the top scorer with 40 off 32 balls, having come in at number five with the side 46 for 3. The SA women finished on 132-6 in their twenty overs.

New Zealand were skittled out for just 67 with Nonkululeko Mlaba taking three wickets as the Proteas women bounced back emphatically from their shock opening-round defeat to Sri Lanka.

"I felt that as a unit, we've been batting really well, and we hadn't started well. It was making sure against New Zealand, which we knew was a must-win, we rectified those basics," Tryon, who was named player of the match, told reporters on Monday.

"Obviously, we watched the game earlier here. So, we kind of figured that it was a little bit up and down the wicket.

"We sat up in the changeroom and we spoke about everything and we said, 'we'll leave it here'. We had a quick turnaround.

"Everyone came with the mindset today of just working really hard. I know we put up a score of 130-plus, which I thought was a little bit short.

"Every bowler knew what they needed to do and you can sort of see that fire burning in everyone that they wanted it (the win) so badly... we've still got two really good games coming up. So it's just making sure we still have that fire burning and kind of being ruthless as a bowling unit."

The Proteas have a mini-break before clashing with defending champions Australia at St George's Park on Saturday.
