In a thrilling ODI clash at Bloemfontein's Mangaung Oval, Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma showcased his batting prowess with a valiant century, but it was Australia's incredible fightback that stole the show in the opening match of the five-game series.

Bavuma's lone battle

The Proteas won the toss and opted to bat first. Temba Bavuma shouldered the responsibility of anchoring his team's innings as wickets tumbled around him.

Displaying remarkable composure, Bavuma notched up an unbeaten century, crafting a resilient 114 runs from 142 balls, featuring 14 boundaries and a towering six.

However, his teammates struggled to provide substantial support, resulting in a modest total of 222 all out.

Australia's rocky road to victory

Australia's pursuit of 223 runs began in chaos as David Warner was dismissed for a golden duck, chopping the first ball he faced onto his own stumps.

Travis Head (33) and Mitchell Marsh (17) attempted to stabilize the innings, reaching 38/1 after five overs.

But the Proteas bowlers struck back, with Kagiso Rabada dismissing Marsh with a brilliant delivery. Shortly after, Cameron Green had to retire hurt after suffering a concussion from a Rabada bouncer.

The Proteas continued to press, with Rabada bowling Josh Inglis for just 1 run, and Gerald Coetzee uprooting Alex Carey's middle stump on his very first delivery. At 72/5 in the 12th over, the Australians seemed to be in dire straits.

Labuschagne and Agar's heroics

Marnus Labuschagne (80 not out) and Ashton Agar (48 not out) emerged as the unlikely saviours for Australia.

Their sensational partnership of 112 runs for the eighth wicket single-handedly turned the game around. Labuschagne, who had replaced Cameron Green in the batting order, played a vital role with a composed innings.

His impressive batting, coupled with Agar's resilience, guided Australia to a stunning comeback win.

Despite a turbulent start and facing the formidable Proteas bowling attack, Australia managed to secure a three-wicket victory, showcasing their resilience and determination in a thrilling opening ODI clash.
