Tazmin Brits says Proteas have experience to handle high pressure competitions

Proteas Women batter Tazmin Brits believes the national team has enough experience to handle the pressure of major tournaments ahead of the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

Brits was recently named in coach Mandla Mashimbyi’s 15-player squad for the tournament, which will take place in England and Wales from 12 June to 5 July 2026.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Brits says they are looking forward to their final team building and training camp as they fine-tune preparations for the global showpiece.

"A few weeks before the World Cup, I am pretty excited to be back. We've been having quite a few good training sessions. I think we've put in a lot of hard work into that. I know that we also have the upcoming team-building camp as well. I think that will be nice for the team to gel again and to get together before the World Cup," said Brits

"But, yeah, winning the World Cup is like that; with every single World Cup, we've been to three finals, and we just never managed to lift the trophy. So we definitely know what it takes; we've played in those pressure positions as well."

"So, yeah , as cliché as it sounds, sticking to the basics and doing the basics to the best of your ability is what will make the difference at the end of the day. Not just your batting and bowling skills, but I also think fielding. We've been working quite hard on our fielding as well because I think fielding determines who is the best team at the end of the day. So, yeah, winning a World Cup is every cricketer's dream."

The Proteas Women head into the tournament with growing confidence after reaching three finals across different formats in recent years, including the 2025 ODI World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Brits was among the standout performers during that campaign, becoming the first woman to score five ODI centuries in a single calendar year. She says she hopes to carry that form into the T20 World Cup.

Mashimbyi’s side also recently secured a dominant 4-1 T20 series win over India at home, a result Brits believes has boosted the squad’s confidence ahead of the tournament.

Meanwhile, six other players from the DP World Lions were included in the World Cup squad. Brits says she is proud of her teammates and pleased to see the Gauteng-based side continue producing national team players.
