Proteas suffer defeat to India in warm-up match ahead of T20 World Cup

Proteas Specialist Consultant Albie Morkel says the wickets in India will be tough for the bowlers during the upcoming T20 World Cup, with little to no bounce offered in the middle.

Morkel was speaking following the team’s defeat to co-hosts India by 30 runs at the DY Patel Sports Academy. South Africa used up as many as eight bowlers for the match in Navi Mumbai with Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Anrich Nortje, and Kwena Maphaka all getting a wicket each. He says despite the loss, they were happy with certain things that they tried out.

“We tried a few things out tonight, which we were happy with, but Ja, I think it’s back to the drawing board for us,” said Morkel

Lungi Ngidi conceded 23 runs in his three overs on the night, and Morkel was happy with how he came back after an expensive first over. The former Proteas all-rounder added that they’ll use Ngidi’s slow balls as one of their weapons at the tournament.

"He's one of the seamers who possesses a really good slow ball, and we will obviously be looking to use that a lot more throughout the tournament."

Morkel was also confident with their top order saying that they have a good balance of right and left handers. He believes their form in the SA20 will also be carried into the World Cup.

The 44-year-old was not too obsessed with what his title really meant, and says he’s just there to help the team in whatever way he can.
