India seal first Test win in Galle to take series lead in Sri Lanka

Manav Suthar returned figures of 6-55 as India cantered to a 165-run victory in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle as the tourists took a 1-0 in the two-match series.

India came into the final day needing another six wickets while Sri Lanka resumed on 88-4, requiring a further 288 runs to reach an unlikely target of 372.

Overnight batters Dhananjaya de Silva and Sonal Dinusha took the total to 142 before Ravindra Jadeja made the breakthrough on the fifth morning, removing the home skipper for 59.

The game then ended quite quickly afterwards as seamer Prasidh Krishna dismissed Nirosha Dickwella while Dinusha made his way to 84 before Suthar cleaned up the Sri Lanka number 6.

The India off-spinner then finished the match taking the final two wickets complete six wickets in the innings and a match-haul of 10 scalps as India went ahead in the series.

The second and final Test, which the Sri Lanka now has to win to draw the series, starts in Colombo from Sunday.
