KKR keep playoff hopes alive after clinical win over Mumbai Indians

The win was built on a disciplined bowling display and key middle-order contributions from Manish Pandey and Rovman Powell.

Opting to bowl first on a rain-affected, two-paced surface offering variable bounce, KKR's decision quickly paid off as Mumbai were ripped apart in the powerplay. Pacers Cameron Green and Saurabh Dubey struck twice each in their opening bursts, while early wickets left the visitors reeling at 46-4 inside six overs. Ryan Rickelton, Naman Dhir, Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav all fell cheaply as Mumbai struggled to settle.

Sunil Narine then tightened the screws through the middle overs, conceding just 13 runs in his four overs while removing Hardik Pandya for 26. Tilak Varma's slow rebuild and Corbin Bosch's late counter-attack, which included an unbeaten 32 off 18 balls, dragged Mumbai to 147-8, offering brief resistance after their early collapse.

KKR's chase began shakily, with Finn Allen dismissed in the first over and further setbacks leaving them 54-3 after Ajinkya Rahane and Cameron Green both fell cheaply. However, the innings was steadied by a crucial partnership between Pandey and Powell, who combined caution with controlled aggression to swing momentum back in KKR's favour.

Pandey, playing his first match of the season, showed no signs of rust with a fluent 45, while Powell added a powerful 40, capitalising on anything loose as the pitch eased. Despite breakthroughs from Jasprit Bumrah and Bosch, including a stunning catch to dismiss Powell, KKR remained in control of the chase.

Rinku Singh and Anukul Roy eventually guided the side home with seven balls to spare, sealing a victory that keeps KKR mathematically alive in the playoff race - though they still require a win in their final match and a favourable set of results elsewhere.

Mumbai, meanwhile, were left to reflect on another season of inconsistency after early collapses once again proved costly, as their campaign ended well before the finish line.
