South Africa went all the way to the final two years ago, losing to India by a mere 7 runs in Barbados as part of a long list of heart-breaking moments for the team. Rabada – who took just a single wicket on the day – says instead of looking back at that day in horror, it will make them feel like they can do it again and hopefully win the trophy this time around.
"What we've done in the past will most definitely give you motivation and belief that you can do it again, simply because you've been there before. Taking confidence from that is pretty normal and natural. That said, this is a new tournament, but it doesn't mean you can't take confidence from what you've done in the past," said Rabada
Rabada admitted that there hasn’t been much pressure from the public this time around to win the trophy, but rather have felt the well wishes for the tournament. He even went as far as saying they seem to have put to bed the dreaded “chockers” tag since winning the World Test Championship.
The Proteas lost their final match before the competition – a warm-up against co-hosts India – and Rabada explained what they were looking for in that match. He added that while it was a full house at the DY Patil Sports Academy, it still felt more like a warm-up than a full international.
"I think it was a very good warm-up game against India. It was basically a sold-out crowd. It still felt like a warm-up game, though – it didn't feel like a proper International match."
Rabada also detailed his experience of the Indian wickets in recent times, and knows they have their work cut out for them as fast bowlers during the World Cup.
