Heinrich Klaasen powers Sunrisers Hyderabad to top of table with dominant win over Punjab Kings

Sunrisers Hyderabad surged to the top of the IPL table with a commanding 33-run victory over Punjab Kings in a high-scoring contest at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, where Heinrich Klaasen once again proved the difference with the bat.

Hyderabad piled up an imposing 235 for four after being sent in, a total built on sustained aggression from start to finish. Their openers set the tone immediately, as Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head tore into the new ball, racing to 54 inside just 21 deliveries. Abhishek blasted 35 off 13 balls, while Head added a brisk 38, ensuring the hosts seized early momentum on a batting-friendly surface.

That platform was expertly extended by Klaasen and Ishan Kishan, who combined for a crucial 88-run partnership that effectively shut Punjab out of the contest. Kishan struck a fluent 55 from 32 balls, while Klaasen anchored the latter stages with a polished 69 off 43 deliveries, mixing clean hitting with smart strike rotation to keep the scoreboard moving at a relentless pace.

Punjab's difficulties were compounded by lapses in the field. Both Klaasen and Kishan benefited from dropped chances early in their innings, with Shashank Singh spilling Klaasen on nine and multiple missed opportunities allowing Hyderabad's middle order to fully capitalise. Those errors proved costly as the hosts powered well beyond the 230 mark.

In reply, Punjab's chase never truly recovered from a shaky start. Captain Pat Cummins struck in the opening over to remove Priyansh Arya, and Nitish Kumar Reddy followed up soon after with another breakthrough. Reduced to 63 for four inside seven overs, Punjab were left with too much to do.

Despite the early collapse, Cooper Connolly produced a standout performance, carrying his bat for a superb unbeaten 107 off 59 balls - his maiden IPL century in his debut season. He found brief support from Marcus Stoinis, who made 28 off 14, and later shared a 68-run stand with Marco Jansen, but the target always remained out of reach.

Hyderabad's bowlers kept control throughout the chase, with Cummins leading from the front and ensuring that Punjab's late resistance only narrowed the margin rather than threatened the result.

The victory lifts Sunrisers to the summit of the standings with 14 points from 11 matches, overtaking Punjab Kings, who slip to second with 13 points but have a game in hand. Despite the defeat, both sides remain firmly on course for the playoffs, though Punjab will be left to reflect on missed chances that ultimately shaped the outcome.
