England Captain Ben Stokes gives credit where its due after resounding Ashes loss

Australia had already sealed their Ashes victory in Adelaide last month, but the 4-1 scoreline makes tough reading for England players and fans alike. Many bold claims came from the England camp, but ultimately, inconsistency cost them. But to be fair, the visitors were up against a brilliant Australian side, as admitted by Stokes.

"It was a great game to be involved in," he told the on-field reporters after the match.

"We should have got 100 more and we allowed Australia to get 100 too many in the first innings. Australia are an incredible team. They had individuals who stood up. Full credit to them. But we know we could have done better.

"Time for reflection is not right now. We've got a long time away to reflect on it. Come June when we next play, hopefully we can put the wrongs right."

But Stokes recognised the silver linings. Young talent Jacob Bethell earned his maiden Test century in difficult circumstances, walking off with a well-played 154 in the second innings. Stokes also highlighted the effort from seamer Josh Tongue, who came charging to bag three wickets on the last day.

"That knock from Beth was simply incredible," said the captain.

"Josh Tongue keeps going from strength to strength. He keeps impressing. We've got some unbelievable talent."

As for the Stokes the player, it was another series full of endeavour. Always one to put the team on his back, Stokes bowled over 100 overs in the series before his abductor gave out this week. He remains uncertain about the extent of the injury.

"Leg has been better, has been worse," he quipped.

"Won't know until I get home."

England's next red ball assignment is against New Zealand in a three-Test series, beginning 4 June at Lord's.
