Chakaravarthy workload concerns overshadow KKR's playoff push after win over Gujarat Titans

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mystery spinner, a key figure in India's T20I success following their T20 World Cup 2026 triumph, is currently managing a left toe hairline fracture sustained against Delhi Capitals on 8 May.

He was forced to limp off during that match and subsequently missed KKR's fixture against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, though he has still been used in high-intensity spells, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly questioning KKR's decision to deploy him for his full four-over quota.

The issue has reignited broader tension between national team management and franchise cricket, particularly with India facing a demanding international schedule after the IPL, including tours of Ireland and England.

Chakaravarthy, who has previously played through hand fractures earlier in the season and turns 35 in August 2026, remains under close scrutiny regarding his workload and long-term availability.

"I know for a fact that KKR physio is in touch with Team India physio [Kamlesh Jain]. There has been a communication from KKR to BCCI that in a previous match, Varun injured his left foot while saving a boundary," a BCCI official told PTI.

"It is understood that he has a hairline fracture. I believe as a centrally contracted player of the BCCI, his fitness is paramount and the BCCI medical team could intervene. Jain might be asked as to what was the input from the KKR medical team."

On the field, KKR continued their push for a late surge into the playoff places with a 29-run win over Gujarat Titans at Eden Gardens on 16 May.

Defending a commanding 248 against a side led by Shubman Gill, they moved to 11 points with two group-stage matches remaining, keeping their postseason hopes alive despite the off-field concerns.
