Ashwin: India could do with experience of Kohli, Sharma at 2027 ODI World Cup

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes any decision on whether Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli play in the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup will depend on careful planning.

Speaking about the veteran pair's future, Ashwin said India's team management must take a logical approach while also ensuring the two stars are given a positive environment to continue.

"In my experience of how these things pan out, it is pretty straightforward: if the management wants both of them at the 50-over World Cup in South Africa and if there is enough energy around it, it is very much possible to keep them on the park and utilise their experience," Ashwin said on ESPNcricinfo.

He added that external criticism or uncertainty from cricket authorities could negatively affect them, and stressed the importance of specialised physical management to prolong their international careers.

"But if there's a thinking that it might steer the other way, the players will be under duress," Ashwin added.

"And forgive me, I am no specialist, I am no medico scientist, I cannot say this with utmost authority, [but if] there is a proper rehab programme and there is something that is constructed around what they want to do and if there are good vibes from the other half, the players will manage to make it."

The debate over Rohit and Kohli's place in India's 2027 plans has resurfaced as the tournament in South Africa approaches.

By then, Kohli will be 39 and Rohit 40, but both continue to show impressive fitness, athletic longevity and strong batting form. Their consistent run-scoring ability has kept them firmly in contention for future selection.

India's selectors face the challenge of balancing experienced players with emerging talent as they build for future ICC events.

The discussion comes amid India's preparations for a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan starting on 13 June. Kohli has been ruled out with a hamstring injury sustained during the domestic season finale, opening the door for Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Rohit, meanwhile, has recovered from a recent hamstring issue and received fitness clearance from the BCCI Sports Science team.
