Why Stellenbosch didn’t sign defender Maxim Gullit

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker says their foreign quota was part of the reason why the club did not sign defender Maxim Gullit.

The son of Dutch legend Ruud Gullit spent several weeks being assessed by the side from the Winelands with the hope of landing a Premier Soccer League contract, however he has since stopped training with Stellies.

Barker believes the 22-year-old can add value to any team.

''I think he is a quality footballer - we enjoyed having him, with the pedigree he has. It was a matter of that we already had our foreign quota full for this season,'' said Barker.

The PSL only allows clubs to register up to five foreign players, but Barker added that the door was not completely closed for the young Gullit.

''We will see what transpires in the market, there's a possibility we could invite him back for our preseason,'' added Braker.

Barker was speaking after Stellenbosch got a home draw against SuperSport United in the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup.

He also shared his immediate thoughts on coming up against coach Gavin Hunt.

''SuperSport are a really good team, they have a good cup pedigree with a coach that has won trophies and there's players who have won cups in that squad, this season has been really tight,'' said Braker.

Stellies have already won a trophy this season in the Carling Black Label Cup three months ago and are eager to add another.

Barker says to beat SuperSport they will have to be at their best.

''To beat a team like SuperSport there's certain things you have to do very well, so yah I anticipate a tough game,'' concluded Braker.
