Why Kaizer Chiefs picked Zimbabwe champs Scottland FC for Toyota Cup

Kaizer Chiefs marketing director and Toyota Cup tournament director Jessica Motaung has explained the decision to invite Zimbabwean champions Scottland FC for the third edition of the event.

The 2026 once-off match will be played at Rustenburg’s Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday, 26 July, in what will also be the first match at the venue since undergoing renovations.

Motaung says it was important that Chiefs return to the Southern African region to pick their opponents, having played teams from West and East Africa in the first two editions.

"We looked at a number of teams, we looked at the relationships that we have, and very important for us was that we've had an East African and West African teams, so Southern Africa was a space we felt we need to look at," explained Motaung.

"And we're just very proud of the work [Scottland] are doing in their league, a debutant that has done exceptionally well with great investment into the game.

"Some of our past players are in there, so we just looked at the history and the opportunity in the Zimbabwean league, and we're proud to have them as the team coming to play in the Toyota Cup."

Having parted ways with both Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef at the end of the season, Motaung remained coy when asked about who the new Amakhosi coach would be, insisting an official announcement is imminent.

"Well that announcement will be made in due course. As we move forward in finalising preparations for the new season, the relevant announcement will be made, and we're looking forward to that," she said.

"We're very excited that the team has taken time off, and we're very happy that they have relaxed and the technical team, and various other people, are having time off.

"But right now our programme will be the introduction of our new technical team who will come on board, issues around players will be finalised and announced, and then the team will move into its pre-season preparation.

"We will have pre-season activities that will take place, culminating obviously in the Toyota Cup just before we go into the new season."
