'We could have lost this match' - Enrique admits PSG rode their luck in Man City thriller

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has admitted his side were fortunate to beat Manchester City 4-2 after surviving a fierce second-half comeback to maintain their perfect start to the Champions League.

The European champions dominated the first half at the Etihad Stadium, scoring three times through Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha to leave City facing a difficult fightback.

However, City responded after the break as Erling Haaland struck twice, while the hosts also hit the woodwork twice and saw Nuno Mendes produce a crucial goal-line clearance.

Maghnes Akliouche restored PSG's three-goal advantage, while Ferran Torres missed a late penalty as the visitors eventually secured an entertaining victory.

Luis Enrique praised the quality of the contest but acknowledged that PSG had been under serious pressure after the interval.

"We could have lost this match if they scored the chances that they created," he said.

"I think it was a very nice match, but the way they play, it's amazing. We like to play these kind of matches."

The PSG boss insisted his team would continue to attack regardless of the scoreline, but admitted they needed some fortune to leave Manchester with all three points.

"We try to win every single match. We try to score. We don't stop if we score one or two goals," he added.

"It's very nice to feel that but I have to repeat, today we were lucky because in the second half we could have conceded more goals."

The result handed Enzo Maresca his first defeat as Manchester City manager after winning his opening eight matches in all competitions.

City were outplayed before half-time but showed considerable character after the break, with Maresca believing the experience would help his team develop.

"From tonight we can learn many things," he said. "Even if we concede two goals (in two minutes) against the best team in Europe, we need to continue."

Maresca, who took over following Pep Guardiola's departure, added that he remained encouraged by the progress made during his first three months in charge.

"I try to continue to learn from the players because I just arrived three months ago, but the feeling at the moment is very good."

Guardiola, who won 20 trophies during his decade at City, returned to the Etihad Stadium to show his support for his former club following the Premier League's verdict that City had breached financial rules over the period from 2009 to 2018.

Despite the defeat, City's second-half response offered encouragement, although their defensive problems in the opening period proved costly.

The victory moved PSG to the top of the Champions League table after two matches, while City dropped to 17th.
