Barkley hails Aston Villa display in six-goal rout over Fenerbahce

Aston Villa midfielder Ross Barkley praised the performance of this team following the 6-0 victory over Turkish giants Fenerbahce at Villa Park on Wednesday.

The Villans maintained their flawless record in this year's UEFA Champions League with their second win of the tournament with a clinical performance against Fener.

Barkley contributed with two goals and an assist in the match and expressed his satisfaction with the display his team put up and the result after a difficult start to the Premier League season.

It was a great performance overall by the team, and we needed this result," said Barkley after the match.

"We're still gelling, we've got loads of new players, we're all getting on the same page on the training pitch, and today we worked well.

"We've got loads of top players in the squad, new additions, and it was nice play in the game today and chip in with a couple of goals to build some confidence within the team."

The result marked Villa's 11th consecutive victory at home in European competitions, with Barkley also praising the atmosphere at Villa Park.

"Maybe it surprises teams here, with the atmosphere. It's intense," added the 32-year-old.

"The fans get behind us if we win our duels, and that's why John McGinn is so key for us: he wins duels, gets us going, he's passionate and he lifts the fans and the team.

"We were fantastic today, and hopefully we can keep building on that."

Unai Emery's side will turn its attention to Saturday's league fixture away to Newcastle United at St James' Park as the look to move up the table from 16th position.
