Miguel Cardoso reveals how Sundowns neutralised Pirates threats

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso says managing Orlando Pirates’ explosive starts and late surges was key to securing the MTN8 title at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night.

The Brazilians claimed a 2-0 victory in Durban, ending Pirates’ four-season dominance in the competition. Goals from midfielder Teboho Mokoena and Iqraam Rayners sealed the trophy for Sundowns.

Cardoso revealed that his side had carefully studied the Buccaneers’ approach, identifying key moments when Pirates typically look to impose themselves on opponents as Sundowns executed their plan to claim the crown.

"It was a difficult start for us because a lot of our players only trained very recently, but we always knew that the start and the end of matches bring the strongest moments from Pirates and we had to cope with that.

"We corrected a few things at halftime to have more of the ball and to make less tactical mistakes. Overall, I think we controlled the game, although we did have chances to add to our lead much earlier on. We were fair and deserved winners."

With the MTN8 being such an elusive trophy for Sundowns over the years, Cardoso insisted it was the target to win from the start of the campaign.

Cardoso did also admit that he would have enjoyed the win more hand Sundowns been themselves against Pirates – but they game forced them to adjust.
