University of Pretoria finally snap winless streak

The University of Pretoria ended their five-match winless run yesterday with a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers City Lads FC in the Hollywoodbets Super League, thanks to a stunning strike from S’bahle Ndlovu.

Coach Maude Khumalo’s side had last tasted victory on June 15 – almost two months ago – and had to win at home to avoid being sucked into the relegation zone.

Following the game, Khumalo was careful not to start believing their own hype.

"It is too early to say that we have turned a corner because you never know whats going to happen in each match.

"This is, without question, a motivational booster for my players before the next game," declared Khumalo.

The former Banyana Banyana international says they put in a lot of work into making sure their fortunes change, and making the players understand the importance of getting results.

She also believes they should have won by a bigger margin.

"This victory has been long in the making. Relegation talk is not good for the University, and I think the girls understood the task, and rose to the occasion."

She revealed how she kept her players encouraged when wins were not coming through, and made sure they kept their heads up.

Another good motivator has been their hunger to impress the national team selectors.

The University of Pretoria finished in eighth place last year, and the coach spoke about her target for this season.

She believes anything is attainable in the league, as long as her players can have the right mentality.
