Under fire, Nabi maintains that there has been progress under his reign at Chiefs

After watching Kaizer Chiefs labouring to its lowest tally of 32 points in the Betway Premiership this season, embattled Amakhosi coach Nasreddine Nabi is continuing to defend himself that the first season was for rebuilding.

For the second consecutive season, Chiefs have finished outside the top eight and this time with the lowest points tally.

Arguably, with the third-best squad in the league, Nabi, who arrived with his own technical team, ended ninth on the log, and can still be overtaken by Golden Arrows or Magesi FC. But he’s adamant that the project is still in progress.

"Honestly, we came here to build a team, if you build it's not possible that you will build and sometimes immediately get a result. Remember, immediately after Nedbank, I told them, no I'm very happy for the club but for myself it's a process. It's not only talking but we work together with direction," Nabi said.

The previous lowest points record for the Chiefs was 36 points in 30 matches under Molefi Ntseki and Cavin Johnson, and both were fired. This season, teams have played two games less due to the Royal AM situation.

Nabi, a former head coach of Young Africans (Tanzania) and ASFAR (Morocco), arrived with high expectations and managed to end a 10-year trophy drought by winning the Nedbank Cup.

However, they still finished 41 points behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns and are 28 points behind their second-placed archrivals, Orlando Pirates, who will complete their programme tomorrow.

The Tunisian-born coach is on a two-year contract with an option, says they now have a clearer plan for next season.

"All the decisions, the objectives go with the process. It's not possible that you win and think you are very good, no and you lose, no, it's a process. I win, I am in process, I lose, I am in process," the coach added.

Nabi is understood to be aware of the uncertainty surrounding his position, amid suggestions of differing perspectives between him and the club’s management, players and even his own technical staff.
