The referee has to say sorry – Gavin Hunt

Stellenbosch FC coach Gavin Hunt says while it may not have altered the outcome, an apology from referee Michael Mosemeng for a controversial decision in their defeat to Golden Arrows would have gone a long way.

The Winelands outfit were denied what appeared to be a clear penalty after a handball in the box, with Arrows going on to score the decisive goal moments later to book their place in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals.

Hunt has since joined a growing chorus of voices calling for the introduction of VAR in the PSL to eliminate such costly errors.

"All the referee can say is 'sorry', but I don't think they say sorry, do they?

"It affects livelihoods and that's why VAR has to come in, especially in South Africa. Every week there are controversial decisions, and it's not even close decisions. The referees get to go home, and we end up being affected."

Hunt insisted they were the better team and got undone by the dubious call.

"There should only have been one winner. There is injustice sometimes in football, but hey that's football. You have to score your goals, because at half time it could've been 3-0. We have ourselves to blame, although not really."

The former SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs coach is still finding his feet at Stellies having recently taken the job and will now switch focus to improving their Betway Premiership position.
